Mandela Gateway

Oakland, CA

Developer: Bridge Housing Corp.

dk Engineering was the civil engineer for the Mandela Gateway project which is a mixed-income, mixed-use development in West Oakland, located just across Seventh Street from the West Oakland BART Station. The 168-unit rental housing development/transit village, which has a project density of approximately 37 units per acre, is a much-needed $52 million catalyst spurring future West Oakland projects.

The complex provides 168 new affordable rental units, over 20,000 square feet of retail space, an outdoor play space for children, community space for residents, a landscaped town square and dedicated spaces for educational classes and after-school programs.

Mandela Gateway was awarded the Affordable Housing Finance Magazine’s 2005 Readers Choice Award for Best Urban Project, National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials Award of Excellence in 2006, San Francisco Business Times’ Real Estate Deal of the Year for Affordable Residential Development 2005 and three Pacific Coast Builders Gold Nugget Awards.

Developer Bridge Housing Corp. overcame many obstacles in order to put together this 4.6-acre parcel that was large enough for a meaningful mixed-use development. The outcome was very successful, as West Oakland now has a modern, attractive project to anchor its new entrance along Mandela Parkway.
